Sneak peek…

I am currently working on a series. I have no idea where this scene will be in the story, but here it is for your to read.

“Eden. Wake up. We need your help downstairs right away.” Thomas shook  his eldest daughter from her sleep. Thea’s sister rolled over and grumbled. Eden, a light sleeper, was at high alert in an instant after Thomas shook her shoulders. “Daddy, what is it?”

“No questions, just do what I say. Get up. Let your sister sleep.” He left as soon as he had come in, not even closing the door to the room.

Eden rushed into a slip and her calico home-sewn day dress. Getting to the door, she slipped on her flats and closed the door as quietly as she could, the hinges squeaking slightly despite her best efforts. She took extra long strides down the wooden paneled hallway, her footsteps muffled by the burgundy carpet runner. The gaslights created small twirling shadows along the floor and walls. Eden walked down the dark wood stairs as fast she could without making noise and walking up the whole inn. It was eerie to see the empty hall. The thick oak tables were void of any place settings, and the staff had left for the night. The third floor board after coming down the stairs gave its familiar creak, and the large wooden beams that formed into a tall peak at the front of the the great hall were casting striped shadows dancing from the large candelabra Thomas had lit. The candle light flickers and mirrored through the tall windows illuminating the room. The moonlight cast shadows through the windows. I saw a young man who must have been the age of Lance,  my older brother, just three years my senior.  My mother was propping his left leg up onto a chair. I saw his bone sticking through his lower leg and blood was caking as it dried around the fracture. I fought the urge to get sick when I saw the injury.

“Father, has anyone gone for Dr. Emor, or bandaged his head? It looks like a lot of blood. He needs to be taken care of. Father? Mother?”

“Lance has gone to get Dr. Emor. Eden, sweetie. Please go get one of the rooms on this floor ready. Take your sister with you. No scolding her, Eden ” I was glad my sister was still in a daze from waking up. My father knew and I knew she was too young to see this.

“Father, where is Will?” I asked as my sister obediently walked to make up a room.

“Will you stop asking questions, and do as you’re told?” My father turned to help my mother wrap the man’s head.

“Yes Father.”
